ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Born in Hampstead, London, England, Barbara Lover was a Canadian artist known for her sculpture and her paintings. She served in the Women's Royal Naval Service (WRENS) from 1942 to 1946. After the war she attended the Manchester School of Art, specializing in sculpture. In 1949, she immigrated to Canada working in the field of industrial design. In 1963 she returned to England, qualified as a teacher and developed the art/ceramic department in her Cheshire secondary school. She later retired to Victoria in 1987 where she focused on further developing her teaching and artistic skills with particular focus on watercolour, acrylic and mixed media, and raku sculpture.
Lover was an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, the Island Arts and Crafts Society and served as president of the Victoria Sketch Club (2003-2005). She was married to John Lover, author of "The Victoria Sketch Club: A Centennial Celebration" (Victoria, B.C.: The Victoria Sketch Club, 2009). Under its first name the "Island Arts Club", the organization now known as the Victoria Sketch Club, was the result of a series of meetings held in 1909. The Club continues today to foster and encourage the work of its members through co-operative and self-sufficient programs.
