Context

The Lions (first named by First Nations Squamish "Ch'ich'iyúy Elxwíkn" or Twin Sisters) are a pair of pointed peaks (West Lion and East Lion) in B.C.'s Coast Mountains. The West Lion is higher at 1,646 m and the East Lion is 1,606 m high. The peaks were renamed in the late 1800s to "Lions Couchant" from heraldry or in reference to the famous Landseer lion statues in Trafalgar Square, London. Along with the Lions Gate Bridge named in their honour, these twin summits are the most recognizable Vancouver landmarks.
