Context

The Great Blue Heron is the largest heron in Canada, found across all of southern Canada and there are five recognized subspecies. In North America, the Great Blue Heron is considered secure: however, the fannini subspecies in B.C.is listed as a subspecies of special concern by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada. These herons live in both freshwater and saltwater habitats, nesting mainly in trees, but will also nest on the ground, on bushes, in mangroves, and on man-made structures such as duck blinds.
