The island was named in 1792 during the Spanish expedition of Dionisio Alcalá- Galiano (1760-1805), naval officer, cartographer and explorer, and a commander of the Spanish navy Cayetano Valdés y Flores Bazán (1767–1835), after Hernán Cortés, Spanish conquistador and the conqueror of Mexico. Regardless of the official 'Cortes' spelling, many of the island's early pioneers anglicized the name and referred to the island as 'Cortez'.Made/Created
