ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Born in Calgary, Herbert Franklin (Frank) Palmer was an accomplished artist and educator, recognized for his portrait, figure, landscape and marine painting. He served with the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II, and later studied at various institutions including The Ontario College of Art in Toronto, The Vancouver School of Art, and the Art Center School in Los Angeles, as well as attending art classes in Calgary. From 1945 to 1948, Palmer worked as an illustrator for the Cleland-Kent Engraving Company in Vancouver. He then returned to Calgary and from 1949-58 worked as a free-lance artist. In 1954, he was honored with the Jesse Dow Award for his work in watercolour. In 1958 he began his career as an instructor in commercial and fine arts at the Alberta College of Art in Calgary (now the Alberta University of the Arts), a position he held until 1981. The university degree programs are now provided through its four schools: The School of Craft and Emerging Media, The School of Visual Arts, The School of Communication Design and The School of Critical and Creative Studies.
Palmer's work can be found in numerous private, corporate, and public collections. He was a member of the Alberta Society of Artists and Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour and he exhibited with both groups, as well as with the Royal Canadian Academy, at the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts and the Atelier Sketch Club in Vancouver.
