With a long and captivating history, Skye is home to some of Scotland's most iconic landscapes with rugged mountain ranges and miles of dramatic coastline, making it a popular tourist destination. Skye is linked to the mainland by the Skye Bridge, and by many ferry routes.
Of note, Skye's first official flag "Bratach an Eilein" was approved after a public vote in 2020. This community flag proclaims the unique identity of this island, with a yellow Scandinavian cross interlaced with a white circle that creates the image of a Celtic cross, while the light blue field references Skye’s name and the colours of its shinty team (similar to field hockey). In the canton (upper left of the flag) is a traditional Hebridean wooden birlinn (boat), with five oars representing the five wings of Skye (the Trotternish, Waternish, Duirinish, Minginish and Sleat peninsulas) all pulling together. The flag was designed by nine-year-old Calum Alasdair Munro and reflects the Island's Gaelic heritage, the Viking heritage and the famed Flora MacDonald. Macdonald was the Scottish Jacobite heroine who helped Bonnie Prince Charlie, the Stuart claimant to the British throne, to escape to Skye and ultimately to a French ship and safety, after the Highlanders' disastrous defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. The journey was celebrated in the famous traditional Scottish Skye Boat Song.Made/Created
