Photograph
This photographic portrait is of Charles Hayward, President of the Pacific Club, 1899-1900. The image is a 3/4 view (looking slightly left) showing a white-haired man with a circle beard in a dark suit, white shirt with turn-point collar and dark tie.
The Pacific Club was established in 1894 in Victoria, B.C., a rival of The Union Club of British Columbia that was founded in 1879. The Pacific Club was reportedly more of a sporting club than the Union Club and was noted for its excellent billiard players. The Club became insolvent in the mid-20th century.Photograph Details

Charles Hayward (1839-1919) came from England to Victoria in 1862 and went into business as a contractor with Robert Jenkinson (Hayward and Jenkinson). He also had various mining and investment interests, and served as mayor of Victoria, 1900-1902. The Hayward family home was located at 1003 Vancouver Street.
The Pacific Club, successor to the Victoria Club (1885-1894), was the first tenant of the Pemberton (later Yarrow) Building on Fort Street, boasting a wide selection of B.C.’s business, political and social élite among its members and guests. In 1964 the Pacific Club directors decided to move to larger premises and took over the B.C. Cement Building at Wharf and Fort Streets. Within several years the Club was bankrupt and many members lost heavily as a result. After 87 years in operation, the membership voted to close the doors on April 25, 1966.Made/Created
