Context

James Paterson was a merchant and the co-owner, with his brother David, of Paterson Bros., a wholesale fruit and produce business on Yates Street in Victoria. The Pacific Club, successor to the Victoria Club (1885-1894), was the first tenant of the Pemberton (later Yarrow) Building on Fort Street, boasting a wide selection of B.C.’s business, political and social élite among its members and guests.. In 1964 the Pacific Club directors decided to move to larger premises and took over the B.C. Cement Building at Wharf and Fort Streets. Within several years the Club was bankrupt and many members lost heavily as a result. After 87 years in operation, the membership voted to close the doors on April 25, 1966.
