Carved Pale Stone Prancing HorseEntry/Object ID
SC2205Description
Chinese carved pale ornamental stone figure of a prancing horse, modeled in an animated pose with the head raised, mouth open, arched neck, lifted forequarters, and flowing deeply carved mane and tail. Pierced and undercut carving separates portions of the legs, mane, tail and body. The cream to yellowish stone exhibits natural color variation and visible veining or fissuring. Probably China, 20th century; the precise stone has not been determined. Originally one of a set of eight carved stone horses displayed together on a common wooden base; five carvings survive in catalogable condition and are now cataloged separately. The carving does not stand securely independently and appears to have been intended for positioning or support on the original common display base.Type of Sculpture
