Carved Pale Stone Recumbent Horse with Head Turned Back
Entry/Object ID
SC2207
Description
Chinese carved pale ornamental stone figure of a recumbent horse, modeled in a compact resting pose with the legs gathered beneath the body and the neck strongly curved so that the head turns back over the torso. The smoothly modeled body contrasts with a deeply carved and partially undercut flowing mane. The stone ranges from cream and beige to honey-yellow with localized gray-brown natural coloration. The horse rests on stylized integral rockwork terminating in a flattened base and stands independently. Originally one of a set of eight carved stone horses displayed together on a common wooden base; five carvings survive in catalogable condition and are now cataloged separately.
