Orlen's life is briefly summarized below from information kindly provided by Jackie (Ausk) Baumgartner in her Public Member Tree in Ancestry.com: Ackerman/Kneip/Fleischer/Hagen Family Tree. Orlen was Jackie's great great uncle.
Orlen Adolph Hagen was born on 30 April 1909 in Hillsboro in Traill County, ND, where he was raised and schooled. At the age of one, he lived with his parents and siblings in a house on Fifth St. in Hillsboro [1910 US Census], while his father, John Hagen, operated a restaurant with his uncle Albert Larson. In the 1920 US Census for the City of Hillsboro, Orlen was 10 and in school while his father worked as a house painter.
As a young man, at the age of 20, Orlen was working as a laborer on the John Gesche farm in Eldorado Township north of Hillsboro [1930 US Census]. In the 1940 US Census, 30-year-old Orlen was employed as a "Salesman" in a "Retail grocery store" in Hillsboro, and lived at home with his parents on Sargeant St. His father, John Hagen, had retired from his house painting business, which was now operated by Orlen's brother Norman.
When Orlen registered for the WWII draft in 1941 at the age of 31, it was noted on his draft card that Orlen was "unemployed". Orlen enlisted in the US Army and served in WWII. We also know that Orlen Hagen served in the Civilian Conservation Corps [obit info, below].
In the 1950 US Census, Orlen, age 40, resided on Main St in Hillsboro with his retired parents and his brother Norman. In this 1950 census, no employment was recorded for Orlen or Norman.
Orlen Alan Hagen died, age 68, on 21 August 1977 at the Veterans Hospital in Fargo [ND Death Certif., below]. At the time of his death in 1977, Lisbon in Ransom County, ND, was given as his residence and that his usual occupation was as a painter. After funeral services held at the Wildeman Chapel in Hillsboro, Arlen was interred at the Riverside Cemetery [grave-marker photo, below].Acquisition
