This set of 19th century surgical instruments belonged to Dr. James Miles Bush and Dr. Benjamin Winslow Dudley. The set is housed in a hardwood box, probably walnut with 12 brass supporting angles and an incomplete lock. The interior of the box contains three trays, all velvet covered. The bottom tray has two niches, one a half moon shaped recess containing 3 curved needles for sutures, and a rectangular recess with ivory or bone handles brush possibly used to brush away bone chips from the saw. The box also contains twelve very fine steel knives with ivory handles each used for different medical purposes, one fine quality rare bone saw (4 inches) with fretted ivory handle ; two hooks with ivory handles (3.5 and 2.5 inches); and one rare cutting probe (5.5 inches) with a point at one end. There is an oval paper label on the bottom of the first tray under the knives that reads "Manufactured by Henry Schively at the Old Established Manufactory, 75 Chestnut St. Philadelphia.Collection
