Dr. Benjamin Winslow Dudley lived 1785 - 1870 and was a teacher and surgeon of the Transylvania Medical Department from 1809 to 1850. He was known for his operation of lithotomy, or removal of bladder stones.
This portrait is painted from the waist and he has his left hand tucked in his waistcoat.
