Portrait of young Horace Holley by Jouett. Holley was president of Transylvania from 1818-1827. Under his leadership the medical department expanded greatly. It was during his time as president that Lexington was known as the "Athens of the West." We have two Holley portraits attributed to Jouett. This shows Holley as a younger man facing the viewer's right. The other shows him older and holding a feather pen. The board that this was painted on is curved.Artwork Details
