Description

Nehalennia (from the Celtic: "she of the sea": was an ancient goddess, venerated in the Roman age at the mouth of the river Scheldt) caused a sensation almost four centuries ago. In 1647, stone monuments bearing the name and image of this goddess unexpectedly appeared on the beach near Domburg. Unfortunately, in 1848, a large number of stones were destroyed or damaged. In 1970, Nehalennia suddenly reappeared, this time from the depths of the Oosterschelde near Colijnsplaat. The first part of this book focuses on Domburg. The story of these earliest Nehalennia monuments is briefly outlined. The second part is a kind of introduction to the production, skills, and art of Nehalennia.
