Description

Leather fragment of a rectangular shield cover from the Roman site at Newstead (Trimontium) Irregularly shaped piece of leather, on one side a semicircular excision surrounded by stitch marks, on the other marks of fork-shaped patch.

Use

Shield covers would help strengthen the integrity of the shield, and would ultimately allow for better longevity of the shield.
