In 1863 a workman digging on Ruberslaw hill near Hawick discovered a hoard of Roman bronze vessels and two scabbard fittings. The three bronze pans were typical military kit. One has a decorated handle. The other three vessels are more unusual: a dish, a large waterbasin for hand-washing, and a jug with a highly decorated handle. Roman vessels were often buried as offerings, perhaps after they had been used in a special ceremony. Roman stonework is also known from the hill - was there a temple here?
