Description

Bronze parade face mask of a young female face, from the Roman site at Newstead (Trimontium), late 1st century AD

Context

Roman cavalry units held spectacular displays in the parade ground called 'hyppika gymnasia'. The cavalrymen wore elaborate helmets with face mask, often representing figures of mythology or characters in a battle. Three examples survive from Newstead, and this is the most complete.
