Description

Brass harness junction loop from the Roman site at Newstead (Trimontium), 80 - 180 AD. Band at upper end decorated with horizontal mouldings.

Use

It was part of the main harness junction on a horse harness used by the auxiliary cavalry stationed at Trimontium.

Context

Trimontium was a military fort, mainly comprised of cavalry forces. Numerous artefacts relating to horses, such as their harness, were found at the site. The harnesses of Roman cavalrymen were decorated with a range of mounts and pendants. Some of the finer examples were probably used in tournaments or ceremonies.
