This book summarizes the results of the first thirty-one years of work since the last revival (1927-58) of the excavations of Herculaneum, the second of the cities buried by Vesuvius under conditions which, if they render excavation more difficult and laborious than in the case of Pompeii, have nevertheless afforded edifices in their upper stories, in respect to both their mural and ligneous structure. This publication, in addition to the documentation of the excavations, illustrates the first important quarter of the ancient city in its town-planning, its network of streets, the distribution of its water supply and the disposition of both public and private buildings in the area.Category
