The Early Settlement of Scotland

Name/Title

The Early Settlement of Scotland

Secondary Title

Excavations at Morton, Fife

Description

NO 467257. The prehistoric occupation at Morton is the earliest yet known from Scotland; several of the radiocarbon dates suggest that penetration into the area of east-central Scotland cannot have been too far removed from the final withdrawal of the ice. The evidence from the stone industries is not considered to allow any clear statements about the cultural status of these people and all that can be said is that there is a general resemblance in the particular types of artefacts to early post-glacial industries of central and northern England; an ultimate source from this direction seems assured. The discontinuous nature of the settlement at Morton suggests groups of hunter-gatherers ranging over a wide territory from the Firth of Tay to the Firth of Forth, and inland towards the Howe of Eden, utilising resources of all kinds within this area. Specialist reports on the stone industries, birds, fish, marine mollusca and plant remains are included
