The shield rib would have been bolted on the underside of the shield to help support and strengthen it.

Shields were made of laminated wood, reinforced on the back with metal ribs and covered in leather, with a metal edging. A metal boss (umbo) in the centre protected the soldier’s hand and could act as a blunt weapon in its own right.
