Cut-down native iron sword from the Roman site at Newstead

Use

Swords were used during battles to cut down the soldiers opponent. Swords could be used for both defense and offensive purposes.

Context

As Trimontium was a military fort, weapons of numerous styles in varying states of conservation were found. The Romans would have used swords to control local populations through military means.
