Description

Enamelled bronze harness buckle plate from the Roman site at Newstead (Trimontium), 80 - 180 AD

Use

Part of the harness equipment of a member of the auxiliary cavalry stationed at Trimontium. It may have had a ceremonial use. It features millefiori decoration in the centre (made by rods of different coloured glass placed side by side and then sliced thin). The surrounding cells are yellow enamel, powdered with spots of brown.

Context

The use of enamel decoration was popular among native people in Caledonia and northern Britannia. It was often used for prestigious objects. It was adopted for some Roman objects like brooches and this buckle, mixing local/native aesthetic and Roman design. The glass used was recycled.
