Description

Leather patch with stitch marks, from the Roman site at Newstead (Trimontium), 80 - 180 AD

Use

It could have been used to patch a variety of leather objects.

Context

Leather only survives where conditions are favourable. A number of leather objects, including shoes, thongs, tent panels, saddle fragments, and clothing were preserved at Newstead, highlighting the range of leather objects needed by the army.
