Description

Mould for making counterfeit coins (denarii); Newstead (Trimontium), Scottish Borders. Ceramic mould from the end of a stack of such moulds used for making counterfeit coins. One face has the impression of a denarius of Antoninus Pius. Broken on one edge from removal of the coin. Found at Newstead (Trimontium) and brought to the National Museum of Scotland by the late John Casey of Durham University many years ago.

Use

This coin mould would have been used to make counterfeit coins.

Context

The counterfeit coins would have less precious metal in them, however would still have had the same value during the time they were in use.
