Description

Irregular fragment of leather with a piece folded in and stitch marks along two sides, from the Roman site at Newstead (Trimontium), 80 - 180 AD

Use

Exact use unknown, may have been used as a tent, for a bag, or for clothing

Context

Leather was used for a wide range of objects necessary to a Roman soldier, including tents, saddles, harness, shoes, clothing, belts, purses, bags, shields and shield covers. Elsewhere in the Roman empire, there is evidence of taxes demanded in hides.
