Description

Intaglio of glass showing Cupid holding a butterfly and torch, from the Roman site at Newstead (Trimontium), 140 - 180 AD. Cupid stands to the right. He is about to singe the wings of the Psyche-butterfly with a torch. Nicolo paste. Probably 'cap-with-rim' style.

Use

Intaglios were used for a variety of purposes, including fashion, status symbol, and an identification seal.

Context

Numerous intaglios were found at Trimontium, both during James Curle's excavations (1905-1911) and later on from field walkers. Nicolo
