Badeluxus im Zentrum des römischen Köln (Bathing Luxury in the Centre of Roman Cologne) documents one of the basic principles of ancient urban planning, a secure water supply through wells and long-distance aqueducts. A new development in Roman times was the regular construction of public baths—provided public or private funding could be found. In Cologne, on Cäcilienstraße lie the massive foundations of a 15-meter-wide apse of the large hot bath. The Roman architect, who worked in Cologne, based his design on Italian models. The bathing rooms were located around an inner courtyard, the baths' sports field.Lexicon
