Description

Silver plated trifid pendant with remains of niello decoration, from the Roman site at Newstead (Trimontium), Roxburghshire, 80 - 100 AD

Use

Harness equipment could be utilitarian or highly ornate. Elaborate and decorative items like these, worn on the harnesses, displayed the owner's wealth and status. They were probably used in Roman tournaments or ceremonies.
