Description

Celtic style copper alloy hilt guard, from the Roman site at Newstead (Trimontium), Roxburghshire, 80 - 180 AD

Use

Sword hilts were used to protect the user's hand from the blade of the sword, and would rest between the hilt of the sword and the blade.

Context

Fighting between the native Celtic people and the Roman occupiers was a constant occurrence, and as such, numerous pieces of weaponry from both peoples have been found at Trimontium.
