In the Museum of Antiquities, Newcastle Upon TyneDescription
The introduction stresses the unreality of the conventional 'native/Roman' distinction for material in Roman military contexts. Although most of the Museum's collection comes from the forts of Hadrian's Wall (eastern sector) there is relatively little purely military equipment, and the tools do not differ from civilian types. Few of the pieces were properly recorded when found, and they can be assigned only a general 3rd- or 4th century date. Some 200 are illustrated, described and compared with examples from elsewhere, under the headings: weapons and armour, tools and implements, horseshoes and linchpins, personal items, domestic objects, structural fittings and miscellanea.Book Details
