Leather panel used as a tent gable top, one of two, from the Roman site at Newstead (Trimontium), Roxburghshire, Scotland, 80-180 AD

Use

This would have been used at the top of the tent where the three points of the tent poles would meet. It was used as a extra layer of protection against the elements.

Context

Tents would have been used as the primary living quarters during the early part of the occupation of the fort, and would have continued to be used by the soldiers.
