Gladii aus Pompeji, Herculaneum und Stabia (Military Swords of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabia)Secondary Title
German Archaeological Institute (Romano-Germanic Commission) Germania 84, Volume 2Description
This journal discusses gladii (swords) found in Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabia held by museum collections. In the civilian towns on the Gulf of Naples, a relatively small group of people can be identified who possessed military weapons in the form of gladii. The majority of gladii were found without any other military equipment on individuals who can most likely be interpreted as veterans hired to protect wealthy families
Where gladii appear with dagger and cingulum, active soldiers are assumed. What is more, the high quality equipment of the soldier from Herculaneum shows that gear made of precious metal was not restricted to higher officers. Some of the gladii from the region around Vesuvius belonged to veterans. A comparison of silver cingulum fittings from Herculaneum and Stabia refers to one or more smiths who worked non-ferrous metals in the area around Misenum. Local production of the gladius scabbards, or to be more precise, their decoration, is suggested by: among other things, chapes with palmette-ends and a single-edged short-sword from Pompeii, decorated in the style of the Pompeii-type gladii.Lexicon
