Description

Antler pommel from the Roman site at Newstead (Trimontium), 80 - 100 AD

Use

Pommel of swords were used to wield and hold the sword.

Context

Trimontium was a military fort. As such, numerous artefacts relating to weapons and warfare have been found in and around the fort. When James Curle excavated the fort site, it was discovered that all of the objects from the fort, including military objects, were deliberately buried.
