Roman Military of the 1st Century A.D. in Augusta RauricaDescription
For this study military finds from the 1st and early 2nd century A.D. from the whole municipal area of Augusta Raurica were examined for an overall picture of the interrelationship between the early imperial military establishment and the civilian town. The study is based on a catalogue of 872 objects in total, which are divided into categories: weapons, armour, belts and aprons, other equipment, and signalling instruments. The presentation of the military finds is followed by their evaluation in terms of the history of the town. For this the study draws on the dates assigned to each individual objects, based on the particular archeological context and geographical location within the municipal area in which they were found. Furthermore the distribution of military finds is analysed for clusters of particular concentration. In the last chapter all the results obtained hitherto concerning military history are placed in the context of the early municipal history of Augusta Raurica and links drawn with the results of research to date.Lexicon
