Description

Finger ring of iron, from the Roman site at Newstead (Trimontium), Roxburghshire, 80 - 180 AD

Use

Finger rings were used for jewellery, may have helped to denote status, and for communication purposes (in the case of intaglios which could be used as a form of signature).

Context

Different classes of people lived at the fort, from slaves to high ranking military officers. The presence of luxury personal items such as rings helps to paint a dynamic picture of life at the fort.
