Iron buckle used to fasten wide straps or girths, from the Roman site at Newstead (Trimontium), 140 - 180 AD

Use

Used to fasten wide straps together as a part of harness hardware for a horse

Context

The Romans depended greatly on horses. Materials needed to set up and provision the forts in Scotland were hauled over short and long distances by horses. The cavalry also, of course, needed a large number of horses, and equipment for them.
