Description

Patch of leather, from the Roman site at Newstead (Trimontium), Roxburghshire, Scotland, 80 - 180 AD

Use

Patch for a tent dating between 80-100 AD.

Context

While travelling on campaign, tents could become damaged from travel or weather conditions. Resources such as leather, while accessible and affordable to the Romans, would be heavy and time consuming to make or procure. Therefore, it was common to simply patch up a damaged tent, rather than make a completely new one.
