Context

The presence of the Legionary Helmet along with the others found at Trimontium, was the first at the time to be found in Scotland, and looked similar to this helmet found in Germany. The inside of the helmet would have most likely had padding, similar to the decorated helmet.

Helmets of bronze or iron were critical to a soldiers safety. This one has a broad neckguard to protect against slashing strokes, as well as cheekguards and a brow-guard. A padded cap would be worn underneath to cushion any blows.
