Description

Silvered bronze phalera from the Roman site at Newstead (Trimontium), 80 - 180 AD

Use

A phalera is a bright metal disc worn on the armoured chest of solider, or could also be used as decoration on a horses's harness.

Context

Trimontium was a military fort, mainly comprised of cavalry forces. Numerous artefacts relating to horses, such as their harness, were found at the site.
