Fragment of an iron headstall, from the Roman fort at Newstead (Trimontium), Roxburghshire, 80 - 180 AD

Use

A headstall fits over a horse's muzzle to prevent it opening its mouth and resisting the bridle.

Context

Finds of horseshoes and harness and bridle fittings provide evidence of the importance of horses from an early period. They were used in transport from around 1000 BC (and possibly earlier).
