Helmet cheek-piece from the Roman site at Newstead (Trimontium), 80 - 180 AD

Use

Helmets were used to protect the head from blunt and sharp force trauma. They could also be used to denote status and military rank.

Context

Trimontium was a military fort, and as such, numerous artefacts relating to the military and warfare have been found.
