Use

These iron casings and linings strengthened the hub of a cart wheel.

Context

In Pit XVI there was a hoard of Iron objects found, of which there were 23 iron hub-rims during James Curle's excavation of Trimontium.

Goods were transported overland by cart on the Roman road system. These iron casings and linings strengthened the hub of a cart wheel. The spokes and rim were wooden, fitted with a hard-wearing iron tyre.
