Description

Basin of pink sandstone with a flat base and two projecting corbel-shaped lugs, from the Roman site at Newstead (Trimontium)

Use

The Romans used basins for many purposes, including storing water, collecting rainwater, and bathing

Context

A Roman cistern is often related to a basin to store rainwater. It was part of the 'standard' Roman house and found under the implusium. Cisterns were (and still are) common in arid areas with long dry seasons. Found in Pit XCIII
