Description

Brass junction loop from the Roman site at Newstead (Trimontium), 80 - 100 AD. Band at upper end decorated with horizontal mouldings.

Use

It formed part of the harness fittings for the auxiliary cavalry horses.

Context

Trimontium was a military fort, mainly comprised of cavalry forces. Numerous artefacts relating to horses, such as their harness, were found at the site. The Roman cavalry needed a range of equipment for its horses, some for everyday use and some for ceremonies. One of four.
