Description

Saddle plate of brass, oblong with two panels with a boss in the centre of each, and incised decoration. From the Roman site at Newstead (Trimontium), 80 - 100 AD

Use

It was used to decorate a saddle, likely for ceremonial occasions, between 80 and 100 AD.

Context

Trimontium was a military fort, mainly comprised of cavalry forces. Numerous artefacts relating to horses, such as harness and saddle fittings, were found at the site. Found in Pit LV.
