Description

Bronze prick spur fragment with portion of leather thong adhering, from the Roman site at Newstead (Trimontium), 80 - 180 AD

Use

Spurs were used to help steer, give commands, to the horse

Context

The Roman cavalry needed a range of equipment for its horses, some for everyday use and some for ceremonies. Many of the auxiliary troops used local styles of equipment in their harness fittings.
