Description

Leaf-shaped plate with a curved rod protruding from it. Made of bronze. Unknown purpose. Found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It dates from between 80 and 180 AD.

Use

Purpose of this object is unknown, however it may have once been a handle attached to a door or large chest.

Context

Newstead was the largest auxiliary fort in Scotland in the late 1st century AD. In the 2nd century it held a cavalry regiment and legionary detachment. Excavations at Newstead have revealed much about the layout and daily life in Roman forts in Scotland.
