The cheek pieces on Roman helmets were designed to further help protect the wearers head and face.

Context

Found at a site in Wiesbaden-Erbenheim (Germany) in 1970/71 which served as a rubbish dump for landfill/building material from a deep infrastructure excavation at Mainz near the river bank/former Roman harbour
